'Aristotlean' Model of Contemporary Learning

There are many models of contemporary learning which have the student at the centre such as the CEO iLE@RN Model. Building on this, as part of my ISTE presentation on 'The Role of IWBs in a 1:1 Environment', I wanted to come up with a contemporary learning model, again with the student at the centre, but this time looking at the physical location (as opposed to the philosophical position) and the technologies that could facilitate this. To this end I came up with what I've termed the 'Aristotlean' Model of Contemporary Learning.

The term 'Aristotlean' was chosen with reference to the appearance of Aristotle's geocentric model of the universe (you can take the teacher out of Physics but you can't take the Physics out of the teacher!)

Taking this a step further, I wanted to emphasise that with 1-to-1, students could be learning at school, home, even dare I say it McDonalds, all the time working within the cloud via wireless:

Obviously with mobile learning this opens up so many possibilities for students to access anything, anytime, anywhere. Even with fixed devices such as IWBs in certain learning spaces i.e. school, students are still able of working within the cloud. Yet, whatever the scenario, students are always at the centre of learning, both physically and metaphorically.

  1. Congrats, Simon! The model has great potential: The Learner at the center is excellent! I wonder if the "devices" could sit on the edge of Cloud/Learning Space, rather than on the edge of the Cloud?

  2. Thanks Peter, I appreciate the feedback. My original intention was to do just that but I was worried that the images would be too small for my presentation. However, for more academic integrity I think I will edit as you suggest for the blog. Cheers, Simon

  3. I like the way the devices are the link between the learning spaces and the cloud. It means that with the right device the learning space could be anywhere.

  5. Just noticed this post. Great to see someone thinking!!!! I like the ideas and look forward to hearing all your news!! We (Mary and I) are looking to "do" IWBs in the afternoon with the eLearning co-ords in August (Adam T is lined up) this could fit in really well!! Watch out for Tony and the Boys in Joisey!!

  7. I love the choice of name for the model Simon, and the learner at the centre of this new universe. Our problem seems to be the thickness of those arrows, ( pipes?) we have the eLearning willing but the infrastructure still weak.
I see you are getting lots of good ideas, enjoy the experience

  8. After Peter's suggestion to have the devices to straddle the Cloud and the Learning Space I now have another modification, suggested by a great Principal, to have the learners interconnected. Fantastic! Every model needs to evolve. This is made much easier and higher-order with contributions from a professional learning community. Further comments or contributions appreciated.
